Direct Sales Opportunities To Make Money From Home

What You Need to Know About Starting Your Own Home Party Business

If you want to start your own business, and you enjoy meeting new people and socializing, you might want to start your own home party business, also called a direct sales business.

The way it works is pretty simple – you choose a product line that you’re interested in – for example selling kitchen products, or fashion or jewelry or home decorating items to name just a few.

Although it’s impossible to estimate how many different direct selling companies there are, we do know that there are over 43 million direct sales representatives around the world, and about 12 million in the United States.  The majority of direct selling reps are women, who go into the field so they can have a business that they can run part time, set their own hours and have no ceiling on the amount of money they can make.

Once you’ve chosen the company or type of products you want to sell, it’s time to start doing your research.  Make sure that you choose a reliable company with a proven track record.  (One of the main reasons that it’s impossible to determine the total number of direct selling companies at any time is because some of them start and then go out of business very quickly – so make sure you do your due diligence before signing on the dotted line.)

Here are a few things to look for when trying to decide what company you want to become associated with:

  • The start-up costs should be minimal.  Beware of opportunities where the cost to join is several hundred or even several thousand dollars – that can be a red flag warning you that you’re dealing with a pyramid scheme and not a legitimate direct selling opportunity.
  • You can return any unsold inventory or products. Any company that doesn’t have a clear “buy-back” policy should be avoided.  After all, what are you going to do with 100 gallons of unsold yak milk (or whatever product you can’t sell)?
  • Your earnings should be based on the products or services you sell, and not on recruiting more people in under you.  If you’re offered commissions that are mostly based on the number of people you recruit or the memberships you sell, be careful.  That is a typical scam of a pyramid scheme.
  • You should believe in the products or services you’re selling.  Ask yourself if you would buy them if you were a consumer – if the answer is no, keep looking for another opportunity.

If you’re told that you need to “act now” to “get in on the ground floor” – be very careful.  Legitimate direct selling opportunities don’t go away.  Any time you discover a company that is using high-pressure sales tactics, make sure that you step back and really do your research. Read their sales materials, check with the Better Business Bureau or one of the Direct Selling Membership Associations and talk to other direct sales representatives.

  • Check into the commission structure and payout periods.  Find out if there are sales quotas or minimum sales that you need to make.  Talk to other direct sales reps or directors and ask questions about the company and how they pay.  Check with competing companies as well, to see what other pay scales are.
  • Does the company offer bonuses?  Advancement or commissions on sales reps that you recruit?  What benefits (education, health or prizes) does it offer?
  • How long has the company been in business?  Does it offer a satisfaction guarantee on its products to customers?  What kind of reputation does the company have?  Does it have a “best practices” or “ethical policy”?  Does the company’s mission and vision statement resonate with you?

The lifeblood of any business – home based or not – are the sales it makes.  It’s always a good idea to create a business plan before going into any new business.  Take a good look at how much time/energy you’re going to have to put into your new business in order to make sales.  Create a sales/marketing strategy for finding new customers and retaining current customers.  Decide how you’re going to market your business – who are your ideal customers?  Where will you find them?  Create a budget.  Decide how much money you want to earn, and figure out what steps you’ll have to take to achieve those goals.  Take full advantage of the training offered by the direct sales company for new reps.

Once you’ve done your research, chosen a company and created a business plan, then it’s time to get started on your new adventure!  Don’t let anything stop you from achieving your dreams.
